Has everyone seen Sex and the City - The Movie?  I hope not!  Because this weekend I recommend that you ladies check it out.  It is a pretty cool movie, but something that you may have missed was the great performance by Jennifer Hudson.  She did a wonderful job playing the part of Carrie Bradshaw’s personal assistant, who kept it together for Carrie when Carrie was falling apart.

How many of you, as personal assistants, have at times found yourselves in similar situations like Jennifer’s character?  Yes, I am sure that some of you could relate.  Think back to the times when you were the go to person, when your boss really needed you to run that really personal errand, or needed that “big” favor, and you did it just to help out.  So ladies, stop by the video store this Friday night, and check this movie out.  I think you will have a good ole time with all the girls and Jennifer too.

Thank God It’s Friday

Finally, Friday is here.  It has been a long and busy week.  Woohoo!

For those of you who like to catch a movie on the weekend, I have another great one for you to check out.  How about Erin Brockovich.

This 2,000 drama, directed by Steven Soderburgh, stars Julia Roberts as a down-and- out-of-luck single mother of three children, who stumbled unto a huge industrial poisoning case.  Brockovich discovered that a local utility company was allowing toxic poisons to contaminate the water supply of the surrounding community.  This contamination was linked to many of the extensive health problems that had gripped the local community.  Roberts plays the aggressive, smart-mouth Brockovich, whose dress code and attitude is on the risque side.  Brockovich who is smart and persistent, is able to convince the residents in the community to agree to file a class action suit against the utility company.

This movie is inspiring.  Watching Robert’s rousing portrayal of Brockovich as one of the key persons who took on the corporate giant, and never backed down, even when faced with setbacks and adversity, made me believe again in the old adage - fight for what you believe in.

This is one of those movies that just you will see again as if you are looking at it for the first time.

Enjoy!!

Movie Review: Jerry Maguire

The week-end is here again.  So it is time to sit back and enjoy another great movie.  My pick for this week-end is Jerry Maguire.  This 1996 film is one of my all time favorite movies with some of the most memorable lines like – “you had me at hello,” “show me the money,” “others may have the coin, but they don’t have the Quan,” and “help me help you.”

In this comedy-drama, Jerry Maguire, a successful high-powered sports agent, has a defining moment one night at his firm’s annual retreat, and writes a searing memo about the rampant dishonesty in the sport management industry.  He then distributes the memo to every one in his firm.  The management, annoyed with his memo, fires Maguire.  As he leaves, Maguire announces that he was going to start his own sports agency that would subscribe to the principles outlined in his memo.  He makes an appeal for anyone to join him, and the only person who agrees to go with him is – an accountant - Dorothy Boyd, played by Renee Zellweger.

As Jerry Maguire makes his exit from his high-flying corporate job, he leaves with one accountant, a goldfish, and a less than stellar client, football player Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr.

For most of the movie, the story line revolves around Maguire’s relationship with single mom, Dorothy Boyd and her son. Throughout the movie, everyone can see as plain as day, except Maguire, that Boyd is madly in love with him.  Take the scene where Boyd is in the kitchen with her sister telling her that Maguire is “the one,” after having slept with him for the first time the night before. Unknowing to her, Maguire overhears that conversation on his way to the bathroom.  Off course, he is now about to freak out!!

All in all, this is a wonderful film, about falling in love and finding yourself.  It is definitely a must see again.  Don’t forget to have the tissues handy, because you will shed a few tears along the way.

Movie Review: Nine To Five

The weekend is here.  Woohoo.  Time to either kick back and relax, while having some fun at the same time.  One way to relax and have a bit of fun is to watch a good movie.  I recently rediscovered the movie Nine To Five.  This 1980’s comedy stars Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda as secretaries working for a chauvinistic and obnoxious boss, played by Dabney Coleman.

This is an absolutely hilarious story of how three secretaries, through a series of misunderstandings, end up kidnapping Coleman, their sexist boss, and holding him hostage for a few days, while they tried to figure out a way to correct the misperceptions.  This movie has you laughing from the beginning to the end.  Lead by Lily Tomlin’s sharp wit and Dolly Parton’s southern charm, you can’t help but giggle out loud as these secretaries try to navigate their way out of trouble.

Dolly Parton wrote and performed the movie’s hit theme song Nine To Five, which has been hailed as one of the best title songs ever from a movie.

For all Dolly Parton fans, a musical version of the film with new songs written by Parton will begin its Broadway run in April 2009.

So this weekend, kickback and relax, pop some popcorn, and pop in Nine to Five in the DVD, and prepare to spend about ninety minutes or so of your weekend giggling at the capers of these three secretaries.  Enjoy!

Movie Review: Working Girl

This 1988 movie, directed by Mike Nichols, starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford, and Sigourney Weaver is a classic feel good, cheer-for-the-underdog movie.  This is the quintessential “secretaries’ movie” for a girls get together, or just to loaf around on the couch and watch when you are home alone on a Friday night.

Melanie Griffith plays Tess Harper, an industrious secretary from Staten Island brimming with entrepreneurial ideas and of finally moving out of the secretarial pool and into the executive suite.  She has the brilliant idea of putting together a lucrative deal for her company and brings her idea to her female boss (Katherine Parker), played by Sigourney Weaver.  However, two-faced Parker, the ladder climber, is hell bent on cutting Harper out of the deal.  Harper realizes in time Parker’s true intentions, and instead turns to Jack Trainer. Trainer an outside deal broker, who just happens to be Parker’s boyfriend, helps Harper to engineer the deal before Parker can claim it as her own.  In a romantic twist, Harper and Trainer fall for each other as they work together on the deal.

Working Girl is a must see, again and again and again.  So pop some popcorn, blend up some margaritas, and prepare to cheer Tess on as she outwits Katherine Parker in her quest to make it to the executive suite.
